Art - Teacher: Leigh-Anne Litterick

Art and design is a national curriculum subject and is taught throughout key stages 2 and 3 and is now offered as a GCSE option at North Hill House. We believe in the importance of giving children a good appreciation of art and we seek to provide a stimulating and exciting environment where students can develop their artistic creativity. Throughout key stages 2 and 3, students are given opportunities for developing creativity, allowing them to express their ideas and feelings. The aim is to lead to a fuller understanding of the arts through participating in many disciplines including, drawing, painting, printmaking, clay work, papier-mâché, ICT, ceramic design, mural making and textile work in silkscreen, weaving and batik. Following the QCA art and design schemes of work, they explore ideas and meanings in the work of artists from the past and present - such as Picasso, Pop Art and Banksy. They learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in different times and places - from the African, Asian and Indian culture and from the Australian Aboriginals. They have engaged confidently in art in the contemporary world and we have invited successful artists to our school for workshops, whereby they have shared their experience, skills and knowledge. We also make visits to local art galleries and have won prizes in national art competitions. We encourage new ideas and different ways of thinking in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
