North Hill House aims to provide the highest possible quality of teaching. The educational ethos is based on an eclectic view of current teaching styles. We recognise that anxiety reduction and social communication skills are critical to ensuring wider educational successes. Therefore our objectives are clear:

  • To provide the young person with confidence and understanding of the social world in which they will function.
  • To facilitate the highest possible educational attainments during their school career.

These objectives are achieved through a team approach drawing on a range of teaching styles, programmes and strategies. The team consists of teachers, carers and learning support assistants. Additionally the school occupational therapist, speech and language therapists, counsellor and medical specialists work with the parents as part of the wider team to meet the individual needs of the young person. Classes are no larger than 8 students taught by teachers and learning support assistants in modern well-equipped classrooms. It is essential that social and communication work is fully integrated into everyday living and for this reason the speech and language therapist, care workers and teachers work closely together in living areas, the classrooms and wider community of the town.

ICT features highly in the school, which has a network of computers for learning and administration. Within the classroom specialised ICT support is provided to ensure students are confident in computer use throughout the curriculum. In addition the school features specialist classrooms for food technology, science, art, technology, photography, including a darkroom and music. North Hill House is very proud its past and present record of the students in GCSEs. In 2003 all year 11 leavers achieved passes in all subjects taken, with 65% achieving 5 GCSEs at 'A' - 'C'. In 2004 this was exceeded with all the year 11 students also passing all GCSEs taken with 74% achieving 5 GCSEs at 'A' - 'C'. We have continued in recent years with good pass rates. All Performance Tables have links below. We currently offer 20 nationally accredited qualifications, with many students achieving GCSEs and 'A' level modules early in their educational career.
