North Hill House is a school for up to 52 students with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) primarily Asperger's Syndrome. Due to the diversity of terminology students may be diagnosed as ASD, Asperger's Syndrome, PDD (Pervasive Development Disorder) 'Autistic or Asperger's Syndrome Traits.' Some of our students have several difficulties including aspects of ADHD. Students invited to attend for an informal visit are usually 'statemented' for special educational needs. Our admissions procedure is in four parts; firstly, we ask for a copy of the detailed education files for the young person. This enables us to make an initial assessment as to whether the school is likely to be able to meet their needs. If the documentation indicates the young person may benefit from placement at North Hill House we invite parents for an informal visit to view the school and to meet the Principal to discuss the specific needs of their young person. Following this initial visit, parents and the young person are invited to return in order to view the school and meet the staff. This is designed to exchange information, answer questions from parents and allow everyone to see the classes in action and 'get a feel' for school. Finally a visit is arranged for the young person to attend the school for an informal assessment of learning styles and social/communication awareness and educational needs. This 'assessment' period, (often 3 days including overnight stays) is designed to allow a detailed review of the needs of the young person and assess whether North Hill House is suitably placed to address them. If a young person is accepted at school this is always subject to an initial 3 month placement. During this period of time the school sends detailed reports to parents and the LEA and the first 3 months are formally reviewed at an initial placement review.
