New Occupational Therapy Sensory Integration Room What is the purpose of the Sensory Integration room? |
||||
| According to recent studies on AS and ASD, it is generally expected that a child with this diagnosis will also have some level of sensory processing and/ or motor difficulty. Sensory and motor problems will impact on our boys' ability to concentrate, listen, socialise, relax, work hard and achieve. In recognition of this almost 2/3 of our boys have of occupational therapy or occupational therapy programmes written into their statements. The Sensory Integration room (SI) is a fantastic resource for working on sensory processing and motor output in a fun and motivating way. Here's how it works. 1. Generally the boys will be drawn to some piece of equipment or activity in the room. 2. All of the equipment will provide sensory input/ stimulation i.e. movement (vestibular), touch, muscle stimulation/ body feedback (proprioception), visual stimulation. We tend not to focus on smell and taste. We work on auditory through using our voices. 3. Usually the boys will need to process and respond to more than one sensory input at a time - hence it's a multisensory environment. Our boys can find this very difficult initially. 4. In responding to sensory input e.g. on moving equipment, they will have to respond by doing something physical, e.g. adjusting their posture so they don't fall over. They may have to respond by doing several things at once e.g. balancing on scooter board, moving forward and catching a beanbag. 5. By doing activities that provide multisensory inputs and require multiple motor responses we are helping the boys develop connections across the sensory parts of the brain, across the motor parts of the brain and between the sensory and motor parts of the brain.6. Once we've developed the connections across the brain, then we can start building up their speed of response and fine tune things like timing. | ||||
